John David grew up in Pinson, Alabama. He was very involved in local church and school activities. He attended Hewitt Trussville High School and graduated in 1964. He was particularly talented musically, and participated in musicals, choral festivities and was one of the most popular students in the class of 1964. After graduation, he attended junior college before transferring to Alabama College in Montevallo (University of Montevallo today). He pledged The Sigma Club/Theta Sigma Chi, sang in the College Choir, and became a member of a popular singing group, The Canterbury Trio, which included Sigma brothers Andy Meginniss and Rick Spitler. That group, along with several music majors under the direction of Dr. Ted Pritchett, performed as The Mutual Agreement.

He performed professionally with various groups in addition to The Canterbury Trio, including Dogwood and The Homestead Act.

Eventually John David and his wife, Jude, moved to the Atlanta area where he was involved in restaurant management.
