Elva's family moved to Berkeley, California in 1940 and later moved to Stockton. After graduating from Stockton High School she enrolled in cosmetology school and became a licensed beautician. She married Odies Gray in 1948 and from this union, Donna and Randy were born.
Elva worked in various jobs through the years; she earned her dry cleaning license, owned and operated her own beauty shop and worked in accounting for John's Manville, Corp. from which she retired.
In 1990 she married Louis Hutchinson. Elva was a dedicated Church of God In Christ member all of her life. She held many official offices within the church and spear-headed many successful projects. Her work in the church provided her with great pride and satisfaction. But more than anything, she was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Elva was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Hutchinson; three sisters, Louise Walker, Bobbie Green and Helen Quarles; and two brothers, Joe and Ronald Matthews.
She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Donna Jackson (Len) and Randolph Gray; five grandchildren, Jorja and Adam Jackson, Jennifer Gray-Wymbs, Brian and Mical Gray; six great-grandchildren, Ke'shaun, K'la, Kristian and Kendric Wymbs, Kimora and Brian Gray, Jr.; one brother, Bill Matthews, one sister-in-law, Bobbie Jackson and several nieces, nephews, cousins, her church family and a host of friends.
