Farmer's Wife is Killed By Horse, Dragged Half a Mile by Frightened Horses Before Rescued; Badly Mangled.
Runaway Causes Accident
The funeral services of Mrs Lewis Anderson who was killed in a runaway near Readstown, Wis., on Saturday (August 24,) were held at Soldiers Grove yesterday afternoon. Thrown between the buggy box and wheel by the shock of a team of runaway horses colliding into the rear of her buggy, Mrs Anderson was dragged for a half mile. Practically all the clothes were torn from the body which was horribly mangled while her arms which had fallen between the spokes of the wheels were broken in several places. She was removed to the Emergency hospital at Soldiers Grove, nine miles away, where she died thirteen hours later. Mrs Anderson accompanied by Mrs Christina Christianson were on their way to visit C C Fortney. Mr Fortney who had been to Readstown was a short distance behind them, when his team became frightened and made a wild dash down the road, striking the buggy with terrific force. The shock of the collision threw both Mrs Christianson and Mr Fortney clear of the tangle leaving them but slightly injured.
His horses joined by Mrs Anderson's horse continued running for over half mile before they were brought to a stop by men who had witnessed the accident from a distance. Mrs Anderson was picked up and hurried to the hospital at Soldiers Grove, where Drs Peterson and Hagen announced there was no hope of recovery.

Mrs Anderson is survived by three daughters: Mrs Martha (Mont) Nelson, LaCrosse; Mrs Emma (Albert) Wilkinson, of Mineral Point and Mrs Anna (Robert) York of Readstown; thirteen grandchildren; one sister, Mrs Olena (Thomas) Anderson of Readstown and one brother, Arnie Salmonson, also of Readstown. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1908 and her parents.Brief Life History of Malina
