Arthur James Hewett was a son of Edward Augustine Hewett and Mary Long. Arthur graduated from the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery in 1912, was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and was for many years was chairman of the state board of health. He practiced as a medical doctor in Newburyport for many years and married Lucy Kelley from Lynn, Essex County, Mass. Their children were Mary Ellen Hewett McLeod, Arthur Hewett, Edward Hewett and Julia Hewett Cole. Dr. Hewett enlisted for service in World War I on 30 October 1918 and was accepted into the U.S. Army Medical Department as a 1st Lieutenant assigned to the medical officer training group at Camp Greenleaf, Georgia. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1918. Later in life, Arthur was on the staff of Worcester Memorial Hospital. He died in Salem Hospital on 25 February 1956 of heart disease.
