Larry Lee Defrance, age 61, of Helena passed away at his home following an extended battle with cancer. He was born June 13, 1943, in Billings to L.A. "Shorty" and Loretta DeFrance of Laurel. He moved to Spokane in 1948 when his dad reenlisted in the Air Force. Larry attended grade school in Laurel and Spokane through the 5th grade. In 1954 they moved to Seattle.

In Seattle the family purchased the Lake City Bowl where Larry spent many Joyful hours and became an excellent bowler and also a certified instructor. He helped operate the business and taught bowling. He attended Our Lady of the Lake Parochial School through the 8th grade, and also Seattle Prep High School, where he was on the debate team and an honor student. He worked at Boeing and Unigard Insurance while attending college at Seattle University where he recieved a degree in Psychology and later his masters in business administration at the University of Washington. Larry served in the US Navy Reserve for eight years spanning the Vietnam Conflict. Larry was an ardent sports fan having played baseball in prep school. He was also a crew member on the Slo-Mo-V Racing team.

He moved to Helena in 1989, and met and married Nikki Lee Norris. He worked in the Department of Labor and Industries and Department of Corrections, retiring in 1998. He then taught computer science at the Helena Vo-Tech College until he was stricken with cancer in 2003. Larry and Nikki played on the O'Toole pool teams for several years. Together they enjoyed many weekends at their favorite spot in their camper at Canyon Ferry Dam. Larry was also a genealogist who trace his family back to the early 1700s in America. He was preceded in death by his mother Loretta in 2000, and his brother Dave (Randy) in 2003.

Survivors include his loving wife Nikki; and father L.A. "Shorty" DeFrance, both of Helena; and a sister Peggy (Bill) Dokken and their son Rogen and children Kaleb and Lindsay of Jackson, MS; son Jason (Tammy) and children Kelli, Connor and Lauryn, son Sean DeFrance, all of Maple Valley, WA; and daughter Laurel DeFrance of Spokane, WA; an uncle J.E. (Gene) DeFrance of Helena; a stepson Dan (Chip) Rowlan, his wife Janet of Helena, and daughters Crystal of California and Julia of Helena; step daughter Andria LaTray and her sons Levi and Colton and his father and mother-in-law Ria (Sonny) Oelson of Townsend; and brother-in-law Mike (Violet) Norris of Helena; and several cousins in Montana and Washington.

Cremation has been taken place with memorial services scheduled for 11 AM on Saturday, Aug 7, at Hagler-Anderson Chapel. A reception will follow at American Legion Post No. 2, 3095 Villard Ave., Helena. Family prefers memorial to the Cancer Treatment Center, c/o St. Peters's Hospital, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT.
