Charles Wesley Payne, age 79 of Wilsonville was called to his heavenly father’s side early in the morning of October 26th, 2020.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at 12 noon at Five Mile Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for over 40 years. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South is directing. Visitation will be held from 10:30 am until 12 noon at the church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Rodolph and Rosa Payne, siblings; Winfred Payne, Gene Payne, Newman Payne, Eleanor Abernathy, and Oneal Burke.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Payne, sons; Chuck Payne (Julie), Chad Payne (Erika), sisters; Gennette Sumrall, Bonnie Haney, grandchildren; Corey Cunningham (Steven), Dr. Taylor Payne (Rachel), Dylan Payne, Mackenzie Payne, Cameron Payne, great grandchildren; Andrew Cunningham, Kate Cunningham, Ellie Cunningham, and Isaac Payne.
Born February 4th, 1941 to Rodolph and Rosa Payne, Charles was the youngest of nine children. Growing up in Hale County, he spent his youth fishing, hunting and playing sports for Hale County High School graduating in 1959. After a brief stint at the University of Alabama, Charles found himself working at Bryce Hospital. There he met a young, beautiful nursing student named Joyce. Charles and Joyce would marry only six weeks later and now are in their 59th year of marriage. Charles found his calling when he began working in Birmingham at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama. He worked there for the next 54 years becoming the Materials Manager and Director of Purchasing. It was one of his proudest moments when there were three generations of the Payne family including himself, son Chuck, and granddaughter Corey employed simultaneously at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama.
