A warm smile, a twinkle in his eye and a hearty laugh, those were the hallmarks of Albert Willie (A.W.) Hayward. Born to Albert Harper and Dazarine Starr Hayward, A.W. was the third of 5 boys. His family lived in Gainesville, Georgia and he attended Gainesville public schools until his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. A.W. continued his education in the Atlanta Public Schools and graduated from David T. Howard High School, class of 1949.

In 1950, A.W. was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve his country honorably during World War II. Staff Sgt. Hayward worked on an anti-aircraft gunnery unit with seven soldiers under his command. A.W. took advantage of all the Army offered and returned home intent on realizing the American Dream.

After the war, the young handsome soldier returned to Atlanta and matriculated at Clark College and graduated with honors in 1956. A brief first marriage produced a son, Keith Hayward. In 1957, A.W. married the lovely Alma Boswell and to this union were born Marty Albert and Shondra Yvlonne.

Both A.W. and Alma were esteemed educators who retired after careers with the Atlanta Public School system. A.W. taught for 38 years and served as a vocational education coordinator where he trained students and placed them in jobs. Many successful careers were started under his guidance and he was always proud of his students’ achievements. In 1966, A.W. received his M.B.A. degree with honors at Atlanta University. A.W. and Alma made their home in the historic enclave of Collier Heights and enjoyed enduring friendships with their neighbors. Together, they were involved in the Epicureans, the Jolly Pals and the David T. Howard High School Class of 1949. A.W. was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Gainesville, and after moving to Atlanta, he continued his fellowship at White’s Chapel and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The Haywards knew no strangers and entertained often, pulling newcomers into their orbit and celebrating holidays annually with themed parties, costumes, and games.

Their family includes a host of friends, neighbors and their children and they are considered “Uncle A.W. and Aunt Alma” by many. A.W. has truly earned his rest and heavenly reward.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife, Alma L. Boswell Hayward; his sons, Keith Hayward, and Dr. Marty (Judge Tammi) Hayward; daughter, Shondra Hayward; grandchildren, Britney Pettway, Isaac and Aaron Hayward; great-granddaughter, Nyla Pettway; sister-in-law, Ella Hayward (Julius); nieces, nephews, other relatives and beloved friends
