Shreveport LA Times, Wednesday, February 1, 2006:
SHREVEPORT, LA --- A memorial service will be held for Ann Lester Messina, known affectionately as "Bumbee," 76, of Shreveport on Saturday, February 4, 2006, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 12:30 p.m. Officiating will be Fr. Richard J. Lombard.
Mrs. Messina was born January 24, 1930, in Plain Dealing to Andrew and Nan Lester, and passed away January 28, 2006, in Shreveport. She was a lifelong resident of this area. She loved people and treated everyone as a friend.
Mrs. Messina was known by many through the businesses that she owned and operated in Shreveport's hospitality industry. In 1952, she and her late husband, Newt Messina, opened their first establishment, "Newt's Lounge," and later, the local favorite, "Newt's PoBoy." Through the years, she worked in the field of education, was the owner of seven lounges, and the manager of apartment complexes and the old Alamo Motel Restaurant. Mrs. Messina's keen understanding of human nature, her love and appreciation for all people, and her selfless, giving spirit, endeared her to everyone she met. She devoted her life to God, her family, and the service of others.
Mrs. Messina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Newt Messina, and her daughter, Sophia Messina. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Wagner and huaband Steve, of Key West, FL, and Jeanne Johnson of Shrevport; brothers, Buck Wilkins and Gerald Wilkins and wife Estelle, of Dry Prong, LA; and sisters, Len Lilly and husband Waple, of Natchitoches, LA, and Jo Thomas, of Houston, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
She will also be deeply missed by her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alliance Defense Fund, P.O. Box 52954, Shreveport, LA 71135.
