Wendell Johnson had a swimming accident at age 16 in 1964 that left him paralyzed from the neck down (quadriplegic). Despite this, he became a skilled award-winning artist, specializing in oil paintings in a realist style. His art spanned a few main genres, mainly western themes and landscapes, but he also painted many portraits. He served as Justice of the Peace in Mapleton for six years, and later as Mapleton's mayor in 1982 - 1986. He co-authored two books, "Cyrus Dallin", and "Mapleton History". He enjoyed reading, watching movies, and taking long rides in his electric wheelchair through the canyons to observe nature and enjoy the scenery. He loved Mapleton, the beauty of the outdoors, history, and the many friends and family members in his life. He was well-loved and will be missed yet for a long time to come.
