Obituary.
DIED - on Wednesday, November 21st, 1883, Wm. H. Cone, aged 68 years, 8 months and 9 days, of heart disease.
Wm. H. Cone was born in Rochester, N.Y., March 12th, 1815, and died Nov. 21st, 1883, at Wirt, Ringgold county, Iowa. He moved from the State of New York to Ohio, and from thence came to Iowa in the fall of 1868, first to Union county where he staid (sic) a short time, and from there to his farm in Union township, Ringgold county.
For a short time previous to his death Mr. Cone had been complaining of his health but nothing serious was apprehended either by himself or his friends. On the evening of his death he was at work in Mr. Ditzler's building, preparing mortar for plastering. It was probably 7 or 8 o'clock p.m. and Mr. Ditzler and another gentleman were at work in the same room. Leaving Mr. Cone at work they stepped out on the street and in a few moments returned. To their amazement they saw the now lifeless body of their old friend fallen to the floor in one corner of the room with one hand still grasping the shovel with which he was at work. Heart disease was given as the cause of his death.
Although called so suddenly, we have reason to believe that Father Cone was ready for the summons. In early life he remembered his Creator and joined the M. E. church when only 10 years of age. During many years he has openly professed his faith in Christ. His bereaved wife and family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

We believe that William Cone was buried in Pumptown Cemetery, Wirt, near Ellston. The cemetery does still exist, there is no stone there for William, but there are several for the Kent Family. WM'S daughter Phoebe Catherine Cone married a Kent. After many years of speaking and writing to the historical society locally, he was found to have been the postmaster in Wirt, it is possible the cemetery bordered his land, and that the county has him listed as buried there.

There are many descendants still looking for info about this man, my 3X great grandfather

We have yet to find his wife, Rosanna Free Cone, still living in 1885, but we cannot find her death.
