George Allen Stone, 87 of Bent Mountain passed away Saturday April, 29, 2006 at his home on
Bent Mountain, the place he thought closest to Heaven here on Earth. He was a jack of all trades,
blessed with the quality to fix anything mechanical, or build anything needed. He was a well known
"whistler", who entertained himself without need of a radio. He served his country during World
War II stateside, because of twin brothers serving overseas. His brother, Jack was killed in action,
and brother Dillard was held prisoner by the Germans until he escaped. Allen was a founding
member of the Bent Mountain Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Many nights he handled calls
and then worked all of the following day at his service station, Stones Union 76. He was a fisher of
the small, scaly variety, but also, in his quiet way, of men for the Lord! He was a member of Haran
Baptist Church and a former member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and
Sunday School Superintendent. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Ruby Holt
Stone. Also surviving are his three children and their spouses, George and Helen Stone, Dana and
Rod DeWitt, David and Pam Stone; seven grandchildren, Jay (Joanna), Chris, Emily, Andy, Jordan,
Lauren and Shelby; and his most precious last minute gift, his great granddaughter, Hannah. Also
surviving are his devoted sister and brother-in-law, Reba and Nelson Craighead; and sister, Stella
Lancaster. Many nieces, nephews and friends, far and near will miss "Uncle Allen". Hallelujah and
Praise the Lord for a life well lived! Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2,
2006. The Rev. Pete Bain and Dr. Don Pegram will officiate. Interment will follow at the Bohon
Cemetery on Bent Mountain. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 2 to 4
and 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday. The family would like to express their thanks to Allen's dedicated
caregivers, Jesse Beyers, and his son-in-law, Rod Dewitt. Memorials may be made to Haran Baptist
Church, Bent Mountain Fire & Rescue, or Gentle Shepherd Hospice. Arrangements by Oakey's
South Chapel, 989-3131.
