Well Known Blacksmith Called to Rest
Sunday Afternoon.

John Connery, a veteran blacksmith
of the city, ten years a member of the
city council and formerly chief of the
fire department, died at 4:30 o'clock
yesterday afternoon at his home, 702
West Washington street. He had been
confined to his home five weeks
suffering from heart trouble and other
ailments.
Mr. Connery was born Jan. 29,1838,
in Wiota, Lafayette county, Wis. He
became a blacksmith when he was a
boy and came here in 1865 to establish
himself in business. He remained two
years and after spending two years in
Iowa and eleven years in Missouri he
returned in 1880 and since that time
had conducted a shop on South Jackson
street. He was a member of the city
council at different times and in all represented
his ward on the city council
ten years. He .was faithful to the
interests of the city, devoting himself
closely and conscientiously to all
matters coming before the council. He
was a member of the fire department
for many years and following the death
of John Harper became chief of the
department.
He Was united in marriage to Lydia
A. Trickle July 3, 1865, and his wife
and four children survive him. The
children are Mrs. Ida J. Smith, Miss
Alma Connery, Emmet J. Connery and
Frank Connery, all of this city. He
also leaves two sisters, Mrs. S. E.
Wood, of Durand, Ill., who has been
with him, and Mrs. Sarah Ryckmsn, of
Woonsoeket, S. D. There are also
two brothers, Joseph Connery, of
Toronto, Kansas, and Charles Connery, of
Rockford, Wisconsin.
Mr. Connery was a member of the
Masonic lodge. He was a man who
was honest and upright and stood high
in the esteem of all who knew him.
The funeral will be held Wednesday
afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home.
