Betty Lorraine Reid Hadley Brown, born April 13, 1923, passed on to a better life on September 27 at the age of 84 at the Hazen Care Center in West Valley City, Utah. Grandma Reid finally came back to lead her beloved daughter across the veil. Daughter of Samuel Roscoe Reid and Vera Vivian Hancock.
Betty graduated from Westminster College and then supported her family by teaching elementary school, and she loved her students. She loved teaching and countless numbers have been educated by her patience and knowledge. She taught at Webster, Bachman, Carl Sandberg, Howard R. Driggs and Rolling Meadows. She attained a Master's Degree, plus several hours toward her Doctorate. Even after retirement, Betty was a voracious reader. She also loved to travel, loved learning about other cultures. Married Don C. Hadley, one daughter, Ethel Vivian (Vicki), later divorced. Married John M. Brown, two children, John M. Brown and Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, later divorced. Always generous with her time, talents and means, she helped members of her family and friends whenever she could. Most of all she loved her family. She also loved nature, animals, staying at her cabin by Kamas, collecting insulators, entering contests, and being debt free. She loved the peace and quiet that the cabin provided, even to just sit for a while, drinking a cup of tea and listening to the birds was a bit of heaven for her. There were always quail in her backyard in Holladay, and we could sit for hours to watch them. She loved plays and bought season tickets to the Grand, Capitol and U of U productions. She loved to dance, and took lessons for quite some time. She loved the opera. When she was a child, her Uncle Ted would bring boxes of used books and records, as well as fresh fruit and produce from their garden. Betty and Greg would rush for the books and recordings, the younger kids would rush for the apples and other things.
Survived by her three children, Vicki Nelson (Dennis), West Valley; John Brown, Raleigh, Bonnie Brown, Modesto, Calif; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers, Rev. D. Gregory Reid, Omaha; Don H. Reid, Salt Lake; Earl N. (Arlene) Reid, St. George; and sister, Shirley Reid Walton, Bountiful; many nephews and nieces she loved dearly. Waiting on the other side for her are her parents, brothers Ned R Reid, Keith W. Reid, and Robert S. Reid, as well as relatives and friends. When life is hard and skies are grey, remember I am not far away. Smile and know it is okay to cry, for I will miss you too, but it is just a tiny time until we meet again. The family would like to express appreciation to Hazen Care Center for their excellent care.
Lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, services will be held at Lake Hills, 10055 South State. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and again from 11 a.m. to noon on Wed., October 3, 2007. Services will be conducted at noon.
Final resting place will be Lake Hills Cemetery, Sandy, beside her parents.
