Helen Cookson
1924 - 2009

Helen Wilma Neal Cookson passed away in her sleep December 9th, 2009 after falling ill to cancer. Born on a cattle ranch to Harold and Wilma Storey in Heyburn, ID, on May 9th, 1924, Helen lived her 85 years with determination, faith & caring for others. As a young girl she had loved learning and hoped to go to college, but was discouraged from pursuing an education.

Her first marriage was to a forest rangers son, John Neal, in June, 1945, with whom she had 2 sons and 1 daughter: Richard John Neal (who died 2 years ago), and 2 surviving children, Gerald Bruce Neal, and Dawn Capel Vanworth. Helen and John divorced in 1953 and she went to Washington State College to support her young family. She graduated in 1957 with a degree in Home Economics Education. In 1959 she took her 1st teaching job in Glide, OR where she taught for 5 years. In 1964 she took a teaching job in Coos Bay, OR, where she worked until she went on a mission in 1973.

Baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 10, she loved the Lord and served Him by serving others all her life. During her mission in the New Mexico, Arizona mission, she worked among the Navajo, Acoma and Laguna Indians from July 1973 until February 1975. After her mission, she moved to Logan, UT where she worked as the Home Economist Extension Agent for Utah State University. Then she came to live with her daughter Dawn in Eureka where she worked for Gottschalks doing alterations, and served in the Eureka Ward in various callings including MIA President and Stake Missionary.

After 45 years of being single, Helen met and married the love of her life, Alan Stuart Cookson, in the Portland Temple on May 16th, 1998. I tell him and everyone that he is my reward for living a good life, Helen wrote. Their time together was the happiest in her life. She had worked all her life, gone to college and supported her children without help. Dawn remembers her waking at 5 am each day, going to school, going to work, coming home and taking care of the family, all with no help from their dad. She had a hard life and never had anything she wanted. The last decade of her life was different. She was happy serving, caring and living with the love of her life. One year she sewed flannel pajamas for all of her 12 grandchildren - pink for the girls and blue for the boys.

To the end, Helen sought for the comfort and safety of her surviving husband Alan, the love of her life.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at the LDS Chapel in Eureka, CA on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 at 3 p.m.
