MAY CARPENTER HAWKINS TAKES OWN LIFE SATURDAY
The Cedaredge community received a distinct shock Saturday evening when the report spread that Mrs. May Carpenter Hawkins had shot herself and died a short time afterward. Financial reverses, so common in these days, are given as the reason for her act. Poor cattle prices during recent years had prevented her meeting payments on her large ranch west of town and the whole culminated in a foreclosure sale Saturday at which she was unable to protect her interests, Seeing the end of her hopes and aspirations for future development of her ranch and cattle interests she evidently became despondent and stepped into the house and with a .38-calibre pistol shot herself in the head dieing at about six p. m. May Carpenter, as she was more generally known because of the fact she transacted much of her business under that name, was a true western cowgirl of the aggressive type. A hard worker and upright in her dealings. With her husband, Emmett Hawkins, she operated a fine ranch of some 200 acres and in connection therewith had a splendid bunch of cattle which ranged on Grand Mesa during the summer. There was no work on the ranch or range which she could not do better than most men, and she did not shirk her share of the duties involved. In her younger days she was a rodeo performer of ability and wide reputation. She could ride with the best of cowboys or cowgirls and delighted in handling cattle and horses. Mabel May Carpenter was bornat Sapinero, Colorado, October 18, 1893. She spent the early part of her life around Sapinero, moving to Cedaredge in 1917 and has resided here until her death on August 24. 1935. She was united in marriage to Emmett Hawkins on June 6, 1925. Surviving are her husband, her mother, Mrs. S. E. Carpenter of Cedaredge, and a brother, Fred Carpenter of Gilman, Colo. Other relatives and many friends will also mourn her departure, Funeral services were held at the Cedaredge Community church Tuesday afternoon with Rev. J. A. Hunsicker delivering the sermon. Interment was made in the Cedaredge cemetery.
