He was born December 10, 1935 in Galva, IL the son of Lawrence and Helen Grant Appell. He married Dorothy Fuerst in 1956 and later married Laura Baughman Waldorf on March 29, 1981 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife Laura, three sons, Dennis Appell of Galesburg, Rodney (and Maureen) Appell of Boyd, TX, and Derrick (and Gretchen) Appell of Altona, IL, one step son, Richard Waldorf of Galesburg, one step daughter, Julie (and Derek) Jones of Galesburg, and three brothers, Grand (and Pat) Appell of Kankakee, IL, Loren (and Suzie) Appell of Roundup, MT, and Hal Appell of Seattle, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
He graduated from Galva High School in 1954. He farmed in the Galva and Altona area for several years and worked for Galesburg Livestock Sales Inc. for 30 years. He served in the Illinois National Guard in Galva from 1955 to 1958. He was a member of the Knox County Galesburg Emergency Management Agency as a weather storm watcher, the Roving Wrangler Saddle Club for 3 years serving as president, the Knox County Amateur Radio Club, and was a ham radio operator.
Cremation will be accorded. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date.
