Hi, Here is the entry for EARLY FAMILIES IN FAQUIIER on William Brooks.

William Brooks born about 1720 married Ann. They had the following
children: Thomas, William, Sarah, Hannah, Dauchers, Mary, Ann, and
Elizabeth. William Brooks will was proven 10 Jan 1767 Hamilton Parish,
Fauquier Co., Va.

William and Ann Brooks youngest son William was born 3 Feb 1752 in
Fauquier Co. William Brooks married Nancy Ann Locke born 4 Dec 1749 in
Fauquier Co, the daughter of Richard and Winifred West Locke. William
Brooks served in the American Revolution. His application for a pension
is on file at the National Archives in Washington, DC (R 1259, Va.;
Microfilm Seried M-804, Roll No. 355). He entered the service in Oct
1778 while a citizen of Culpeper Co., Va. He was drafted a second time
in Feb. 1781 while a resident of Botetourt Co., Va. He was in the
battles of Alamance and Whiteall's Mills. He applied for a pension 25
Sep 1832 while a resident of Tazewell Co., Va. He was eighty one years
old. In August 1834, Nancy Brooks, widow of William Brooks, applied for
a pension at the age of ninty four.

According to a newspaper article by Charles F Brooks in about 1977,
William, his wife and six or seven children left the North Fork of the
Roanoke River in Botetourt Co, traveling on pack horses in Indian
infested wilderness, arriving in Thompson Valley, Tazewell Co., Va in
about 1782. William lived the rest of his life there, and maintained a
hig civic standing in the community. William died 24 Jan 1841 in
Tazewell Co.

On Tuesday, May 10 about 1977 the Fort Maiden Spring Chapters of
Daughters of the American Revolution conducted a dedication service in
which a headstone was placed at the grave of William Brooks. Taps
sounded across the green hill in Thompson Vally where thirty or more of
William Brooks decendants were gathered. It was recognition well
deserved by one of our forefathers who helped preserve a great nation.

William and Nancy Ann Locke Brooks had the following children: William,
John, Richard Locke, Thomas, James, Margaret, Polly, Nancy, Sarah,
Elizabeth, Mary, and Levicy.

John Brooks was born June 11, 1770, in Fauquier County, Virginia. He was the son of William Kirk Brooks and Nancy Anne Locke. He is listed in the Brooks family Bible as John Brooks. The census, marriage, and tax lists show his name as John Brooks.

John Brooks is listed on the 1802 Tazewell County, Virginia, Personal Property tax list.

John Brooks married Jean Whitley on February 5, 1793, in Wythe County, Virginia. They had five children: Sarah "Sallie" (1796 - 1850); Nancy Jane (1796 - 1861); Margaret (1805 - 1860); William McDow (1810 - 1850); and Robert ( ___ - ___ ).

John Brooks appears on the 1820 and 1840 census lists as John Brooks in Tazewell County, Virginia. He is shown with the middle initial "L" in the 1830 Tazewell County, Virginia, census.

John Brooks married, second, Mary A. "Polly" Chaffin (1798 - 1833) on May 31, 1821, in Tazewell County, Virginia. They had eight children: Mary Jane "Polly" (1823 - ___ ); Lilburn Basil (1825 - 1902); Basil Lilburn (1825 - 1855); Ruth Ann (1826 - ___); James (1828 - ___); Mahala (1831 - 1914); John Kirk (1832 - 1909); and Charles C. (1837 - ___). Lilburn and Basil were likely twins, with unusual names.
