BUCKNER, Newton Newton Buckner, 91, of Lawson Rd., Sand Lake, NY died peacefully at his daughter's home on the evening of Friday (April 29, 2005) with his loving family at his side. He was born 10/7/1913 in Garden City, Long Island, the son of the late Mortimer Norton and Paula Kellerman Buckner. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Blake Buckner and his sister, Caroline Buckner Winston. He is survived by his children: Susan B. Hurd of E. Greenbush, NY, Anja L.S. Carr of Oahu, Hawaii, Newton Buckner III (Bobbi) of Farmington, Gail Buckner Eason (Larry) of Hampton, VA, Blake A. Buckner (Beth) of E. Greenbush, NY and David F. Buckner (Denise) of Hoosick Falls, NY. His 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren will also cherish his memory. During his youth he spent his summers on Fisher Island and he had a passion for sailing. He was a graduate of St. Paul's School, New Hampshire, where he competed in Crew, and Yale University Class of 1937. During World War II he served as a Lt. Commander in the United States Naval Reserve. He also served as the Assistant Secretary to Gov. Thomas E. Dewey and retired from Advest Company in Albany. Very active in the community, he was a communicant of St. David's Episcopal Church, Commissioner and Charter Member of the Taborton Fire Company, member of the Averill Park Fire Department and Past President of the Bowman Lake Association. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3025, The American Legion Post 1021, and Past President of Kiwanis International. He was also involved in many Masonic organizations: Apollo-King Solomon's Lodge #13 F&AM (Past Master and Trustee), Evening Star Lodge No. 101 F&AM of Unionville, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Supreme Council-33 Degree, York Rite, Apollo Chapter #48, Apollo Commandry No. 15, and Shriners. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m., May 4, 2005 at Saint David's Episcopal Church, 2647 Brookview Court, Castleton, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to The Community Hospice of Rensselaer, 295 Valley View Boulevard, Rensselaer, NY 12144 or The Masonic Home, 2150 Bleecker St., Utica, NY 13501.
