Civil War Union Naval Officer. He entered the US Navy as a midshipman in 1841, and served aboard the USS Constitution during the Mexican War. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1851, he served on the USS Niagara, which assisted in laying the first Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. Resigned from the Navy in 1858, but returned in 1862, commissioned a Lieutenant Commander, and served during the Civil War in the Atlantic Fleet. After the war he was promoted to Commander and Fleet Captain of the Atlantic Squadron, serving in that post from 1867 to 1868. He then served as Superintendent of the Philadelphia Naval Asylum before being promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1885 and retired in 1887.
