Thelma Ruth Bryarly-Burleson was born on 29 September 1899 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas to Edgar Lee Bryarly and Starkie Pearl Glover-Bryarly.

Thelma married James Maywood Burleson on 30 March 1918 in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. Thelma and James did not have children of their own, but raised a niece:

Betty Jean Burleson-Hill (Living).

Thelma loved to write poetry and short stories. One of her books of poetry published, (1971), was entitled, "Leaves from a Black Jack Farm," Naylor Company: San Antonio, TX, 68 pages.

Thelma passed away on 1 July 1978 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. She was laid to rest next to her husband at Rush Springs Cemetery in Rush Springs, Grady County, Oklahoma.
