Alexander Matveevich Ponyatov was a mechanical & electrical engineer in recording & broadcasting industry. He emigrated from Russia to the United States after the 1917 Russian Revolution. He was the founder of the AMPEX Corporation in Redwood City California in 1944. Ponyatov developed audio & video magnetic recording tape.
Entertainer Bing Crosby was able to pre-record "The Bing Crosby Show" at his home in Menlo Park California. He no longer had to travel to Los Angeles California to do his show. Bing Crosby became an investor in the AMPEX Corporation.
In 1961 Ponyatov received an Oscar for invention of video recording tape. AMPEX recording equipment went with to the moon on Apollo 11 on the first trip to the moon in 1969.
