James C. "J.C." Cates Jr., age 72, of Geneva passed away Thursday, September 27, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born November 30, 1934 in Medina, Tennessee the son of James C. and Mary Onieva (O'Daniell) Cates.

Mr. Cates worked for Western Electric in West Chicago for 35 years and for 12 years as a custodian at the Kane County Jail. He also had many interests among them fishing, boating, horseshoes, golf, playing cards, watching the game show channel and western movies. He was an avid Bears and White Sox fan and was a member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge, Batavia V.F.W., Turners Club in Aurora and the National Guard.

He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his three children, Justine Olson of Batavia, Richard (Christine) Cates of DeKalb, and Diana (Jeff) Rogers of Hinckley; eight grandchildren, Erin, Andrew, and Madison Olson, Ryan, Jordan, and Dylan Grote, Tara Kay and Tyler Needham; great-grandchildren, Adiana and Elias Oquendo; and cousin, Dan (Diana) McLemore of Chicago. Also survived by many special friends and neighbors too numerous to mention.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of thirty seven years, Mary, who passed away January 18, 1996.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 1, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Rt. 38), Geneva with his sister-in-law, Rev. Marsha Scallions officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home, Geneva.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society, 111 E. Wilson Street, Batavia, IL 60510 or Vitas Hospice, 580 Waters Edge, Suite 100, Lombard, IL 60148, would be appreciated.

The family would like to extend a great appreciation to all the nurses, volunteers, dear friends and doctors for his care at Vitas Hospice, Dreyer Medical Clinic and Provena Mercy Center Hospital.
