The son of Abraham and Pieternella (Nellie) Back, John immigrated to the United States around 1869 along with his parents and most of his siblings. They lived for awhile in Battle Creek, Michigan and later in South Bend, Indiana where his father worked as a carpenter. On September 28, 1898 in Cook County, Illinois, John married Clara A Tappert. They lived in Chicago where he worked as a trunk buyer for the Boston Store, a department store in downtown Chicago.
