Ann Rives Zappa passed away at her home in Chatham County, North Carolina on November 21, 2020, one day after her 89th birthday. Her life will be celebrated as an example of joyful living and finding delight in everyday things and enduring friendships.
Ann resided in Chatham County, North Carolina, on the property where she was born and raised. She retired from a career as Head of the English Department at MacCormac Junior College, Chicago; and Administrative Assistant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was the author of three books, including Memoirs of a Lady Cannoneer.
She was an active and lifelong member of Lystra Baptist Church, singing in the church choir and serving as Church Clerk for over 30 years.
She was an avid fan of both collegiate and NFL football, tailgating NC State home games with a stalwart group of friends for many years. She loved to follow NC State players' careers as they continued to the NFL.
Ann Rives Zappa is the great-granddaughter of Confederate Veterans Pvt. David Edward Rives Co. E, 26th North Carolina Troops and Pvt. Noah R. Cheek, Co. H, 70th North Carolina Troops. She was a dedicated Confederate re-enactor as well as a member of the Winnie Davis Chapter 259 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Order of Confederate Rose.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Zappa Sr. and Nelle Rives Cheek. She is survived by her two children, Cynthia Cole (Matthew Bennett) of Chapel Hill and Brooks Cole (Sabine Schuh) of Barcelona, Spain and her loving companion, Laurent Taylor of Fairfield, IA.
A graveside funeral in her honor will take place at Lystra Baptist Church on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at 2 pm. Pastor Tim Williford will officiate. Lystra is located at 686 Lystra Road, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Donaldson Funeral Home is handling her arrangements.
