Howard Nelson Gilliam, of Channelview, Texas, passed away on November 16, 2020 in Houston due to complications from a stroke.
Howard was born on July 28, 1939 in Houston, Texas to Nelson Frank “Pete” Gilliam and Irene Nagy Gillian. He had one older sister, Peggy Ann, and a younger brother, Charles Allen. Howard attended LaPorte schools and graduated in 1957, and afterward enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He learned many trades and skills while in the Navy that carried him through his entire work career.
Howard accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized in 1958 when he married Mary Musgrove. Two children were born, Mark Douglas in 1960, and Diana Enise in 1961.
After serving for four years in the Navy, Howard returned to his hometown on LaPorte, Tx and was employed by Tenneco Refinery. Tenneco transferred the family to its Rockport location in 1965. Howard took a supervisory position with Reynolds Metals Company (Sherwin Plant, Ingleside) In the early 1970’s and eventually left there to run his own business full-time.
Diving expierence from the Navy, along with understanding of pipelines, ships, and barges, had launched Howard into a side-line business in the late 1960’s when he was recruited by Phillips to repair pipelines in Copano Bay at Rockport. He called the business A & A Diving Service (so it could be the first in the phone book). One thing led to another and the provided services diversified, and the company expanded into Arasas Costal Bend Marine Services (ACB Marine – again, for a prominent spot in the phone book).
On Call Enterprises grew from there providing services outside the marine industry. Howard, with Diana at his side, moved into the inner harbor of the Port of Corpus Christi starting Costal Bend Mooring & Marine to moor ships in 1985. He very successfully retired from the marine industry in 2000. He could tell jokes all day. If you didn’t like Howard, you had not yet gotten to know him. To know him was to love him. He was a good man.
Mary was deceased in 1981. Howard and Mary have two granddaughters by Mark. Howard met and married Erma Jo Birdwell Morris in 1982. They have four grandchildren together. Erma passed in 2003. Howard married Alice Faye Parsley Roebuck in 2006 and they share six grandchildren.
Christianity was always a very important part of Howard’s life. He knew the Bible through and thorough, and shared his knowledge freely. He assisted Alice in teaching Sunday School at Dell Dale Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. His last words to Alice were quoting one of his favorite scriptures.
Howard suffered a major stroke in 2008 that hampered his ability to think clearly, to read and write, and to function normally in numerous ways. Over time and with great effort, he re-gained his ability to read, write, drive, and function well in everyday life with Alice at his side. He enjoyed Bible study and he enjoyed food. He was an avid gun collector, and he enjoyed shooting. He liked helping Alice in the garden and around the house to the best of his ability. Howard baked chicken for and shared good times with their dogs, Winston and Sadie, and took “cat” naps with their tabby cat, Allie.
He enjoyed action movies and comedies, and would rarely miss an opportunity to watch Sanford & Son, Hogan’s Heroes, The Beverly Hillbillies, or Gunsmoke. Howard is predeceased by his parents, “Pete” and Irene Gilliam; his former wives, Mary Gilliam, and Erma Gilliam; as well as siblings, Peggy Tellez and Charles Gilliam. He is survived by his wife, Alice Roebuck-Gilliam; and her children, Kenneth Roebuck and wife Barbara, and Susan Sheffield and husband Steve; and by his daughter, Diana Harrington and husband Joe; Howard had twelve grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren with more on the way.
A visitation for Howard will be held on Friday, November 20, 2020 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M in the chapel of Carter-Conley Funeral Home with funeral services to begin at 11:00 A.M. Howard will be laid to rest privately at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery under the direction of Carter-Conley Funeral Home.
