Politician, French Statesman. Known for being the twentieth president of the French Republic in the period from 1974 to 1981. Born Valéry Marie René Georges Giscard d'Estaing of Andorra to an upper middle class family, related to the Carnot family, he brilliantly completed his secondary education and university studies at the most prestigious institutes in the capital, without neglecting an occasional militancy in the partisan resistance during the Nazi occupation, so much so that he was placed in the regular French army during the final part of the conflict (1944). He began his political career in 1956 with his election as a deputy and since then has held the most prestigious offices of the state and the European Union. More precisely, Valery Giscard d'Estaing was Secretary of State and Minister of Finance (1959-1966) and Minister of Economy during the presidency of Georges Pompidou (1969-1974). He won the 1974 presidential elections by beating his opponent Francois Mitterand becoming the youngest French head of state since 1848. He was among other things President of the European Convention (2002-2003), three times First President of the G7 (1975-1978-1980), president of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Assemblée Nationale from 1987 to 1989 and from 1993 to 1997, European parliamentarian from 1989 to 1993. In 2003 he was elected member of the Académie Française. During his political and cultural life he has received numerous awards including the Gold Medal of the Jean Monnet pour l'Europe Foundation (2001), the prestigious Legion of Honor and many foreign honors.
