His paternal grandparents were James Avery and Mercy (Baker) Avery (1787-1869).

He married, first, at Maryville,MO, Letitia Andrews.

He married, second, on Jan 17,1878 at Maryville,MO, Charlotte "Lottie" Van Loon. She was born on May 8,1850 at Wapola,IA, a daughter of Charles Van Loon and Loseda (Dohlerhyde) Van Loon. She died at Maryville on Sep 22,1896
