Wilma Alberta Riggs Rector, passed away at age 98, December 4, 2020. A lifelong resident of Terre Haute, IN, Wilma and her late husband, Marvin, moved to Avon, IN in 1999. In 2014, she moved to Westside Gardens where she was a resident until her passing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Russell Rector on February 14, 2010. She was born to Rev. Charles H., and Katherine M. Riggs February 24, 1922 [See Gravesite details] in Rising Sun, IN. Siblings included sisters, Frances Dishon Dorsett, deceased, November 6, 2017, Mildred Marie, d. 1918, Betty Jean, d. 1925, and brother, Paul David, d. 1934. Her father, Rev. Charles Riggs, pastored congregations in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. It was during his ministry in Terre Haute, IN, that Wilma met Marvin R. Rector. They were married September 9, 1940 [should be 29th] and established their home in Terre Haute. To their union were born a daughter, Sandra Felter (David), and two sons, Martin (DeAnne) and Byron (Michelle). Wilma is survived by her children and grandchildren, David R. Felter (Pam), Jib Felter (LeEtta), Kimberly Sangar (Emanuel), Kevin Rector (April), Max Rector (Melissa), Caitie Muller (Luke), and Emily Lara (Enrique). Wilma is survived by the following great grandchildren, Samantha Felter, Abby Felter, Erin Felter, Annabelle Felter, Gabriel David Felter, Benjamin Rector, Lily Rector, Mason Rector, Isaac Rector, Addison Rector, and C. J. Mueller. An early-childhood educator, Wilma Rector owned and operated a daycare center specializing in caring for the children of public school teachers. Her skills and leadership in this area caught the attention of Indiana State University as they frequently used her model as an example for students in the school of education. In addition to her work, Wilma enjoyed the fellowship of her local church. She loved traveling throughout North America with her husband and friends. Friends found her to be a constant friend, a good listener, willingly giving of her time and interest. Services will be at 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the Westside Church of the Nazarene, 8610 W. 10th St., Indianapolis, where friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 am until service time at 12 noon.  Burial will be at  Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield, IN.  Arrangements by Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield.

Gravesite Details

The obituary has February 24 as her birthdate but the gravestone has February 12. She explained to me that Indiana had made a mistake on her birth certificate and could not get it corrected. She had the 12th engraved on the stone.
