He was also a Doctor of Divinity. after retiring from his post as Bishop of Norwich, He became Rector of St Mary Magdalene's Church in Sandringham after he retired from the office of Bishop of Norwich and in 1961 baptized the Hon. Diana Spencer (later to become the Princess of Wales). He was the Clerk of the Closet from 1942–63. He was an active Freemason and served as Provincial Grand Master for Norfolk.
