Carl Reece Sexton, age 88, of Knoxville, crossed over the river to rest in the shade of the trees and live in heaven with his Lord on Friday, December 4, 2020. He was retired Publisher and Editor of The Civil War Courier, Camp Chase Gazette, the Citizen’s Companion and earlier from the Citizen Tribune, Morristown.
He began his newspaper career as editor of his hometown newspaper in Sevierville when he was discharged from the Army Security Agency. Later, he was editor of a newspaper in New York and in Pennsylvania. He joined the Citizen Tribune staff in 1969, and retired as advertising director in 1989. He was a member of the Tennessee Press, the Mid-Atlantic (5 states) Advertising Association, served on the board of directors and President of the Scholarship Foundation, and the International Newspaper Marketing and Advertising Association. He won dozens of first place awards for creative advertising design.
He attended the Morristown Chamber of Commerce leadership program and was active in the community. He served as a Hamblen County Commissioner; on the Boards of Directors of Morristown Hamblen Hospital, the Youth emergency Shelter, Keep America Beautiful, and chairman of the board of the Lakeway Civil War Preservation and the General Longstreet Museum which he developed with Mike Beck and Jack Fishman.
He was a proud veteran of the Army Security Agency, and loved early American history and genealogy. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, the Sons of the Revolution (state vice president), and the Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge. He helped organize the Bradford-Rose Camp of Confederate Veterans and served as first camp commander, and the Colonel McFarland of the SOR.
He traveled all over the eastern United States with the Civil War Publications covering battle reenactments and events. The Publications sponsored three national anniversary events and he was promotor of Chickamauga and Franklin reenactments, and media sponsor of Shiloh, and two reenactments in Morristown.
He was most proud that all his children accepted Christ as their savior and were members of Dupont Baptist Church in Seymour, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He became a member of First Baptist Church when he moved to Morristown.
His hobbies were scuba diving, golf, photography. He photographed UT football and basketball and NASCAR races for 28 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherrod Sexton and Ann Myers Sexton, Sevier County/Knoxville, wife Peggy Rogers Sexton and sons Chuck and John Sexton, brother Howard Sexton, and sister, Portia Williamson.
He is Survived by wife Marie White Sexton, sons Steve Sexton, Chris White and Ben (Kim) White all of Knoxville: daughters Amelia (Brian) O’Dell of Harrisonburg, VA, Rosemary (Jeff) Rogers, Talbott and Polly Pierce, Cincinnati and sister Wilma (Bob) Latham, Seymour 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
