Film Actor. One of the most popular actors in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s, he started his film career with The Wind (1959), and quickly rose with films like Peace to Him Who Enters and Dima Gorin's Career (both 1961). But the film that made him a star is Operation "Y," and Shurik's Other Adventures (1965). He played the Shurik character in other movies, such as Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1967) and Ivan Vasilievich Changes Profession (1973). He also did work as a dubbing actor for actors like Omar Sharif and Tony Curtis. Sadly, he got typecast, and by the 1980s, his film career was almost dead, and he turned to alcoholism to cope. The work he could find as an actor in the 1990s were in dubbing for American films, like Showgirls (1995), Armageddon (1998) and Disney animated films like Hercules and Tarzan (1997 and 1999, respectively). In 1999, when it looked like he was going to have a career comeback with a hit sitcom, he was scheduled for heart bypass surgery on September 1st. He died days before the procedure, on August 22nd.
