John lived all of his life in Pocahontas, Illinois. His father Andrew left land for each of his sons from the orignial Rea Farm. The only piece that remains today is about 45 acres owned by John's grandson David Rea and his neice's Betty's husband Paul. It is bordered by I-70 and the Conrail Railroad tracks.
He hauled coal for a living out of a mine that operated there in Pocahontas and farmed on the side. He lived to be 98 and 1/2 years old when he passed away in October of 1974 in Highland, Illinois.
