James D. Shepherd, 76, Lancaster, Ohio, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, May 26, 2001.
He was born January 28, 1925 in Grand Island, Nebraska, a former resident of Chillicothe,Ohio, who ha lived in Lancaster for 47 years.
He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving at Normandy on D-Day, also the European-African, Asiatic-Pacific, American Theater and Mediterraean Theater campaigns. He served aboard the USS Charles Carroll. Jim has worked at the VA Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio, the Lancaster hospital and retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Lancaster, in 1980.
Jim and his wife, Delcia, have been active, dedicated members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, North Berne, Ohio, since 1960. They were involved in projects to help fund the Lutheran Food Pantry in Lancaster, and happily volunteered countless hours there. Through known as a man of few words, Jim was a kind, gentle, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Because of his boundless enthhhusiasm for life, eternal positive attitude, great sense of humor and gennnuine love for all that God gave him, he touched the lives of so many people and will remai in our minds and hearts forever.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Delcia Marie Shepherd; a son, Jay (Peggy) Shepherd of Lancaster; two daughters, Sharon Lynn (Anthony) Riecky of lancaster and Beverly An (Robert) Batina of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; Vicki Snead,Jim Snead, Bob Batina,Wendi Riecky, Toni Riecky, Casey Shepherd and Shanon Shepherd; two great-grandchildren, Jamie Snead and Anna Graf; two sisters, Effie Mae Johnson and Winnie Grimm; and many nieces, nephews and loving friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Isaac and Bessie M. Shepherd; brothers, Mark Shepherd, Thomas Shepherd and David Shepherd; sisters, Catherine Macabee, Naomi Scarberry, Mona Sparks and Evelyn Shepherd.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, North Berne, with Pastor Merlyn Sietz officiating.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery with the Lancaster Burial Detail performing military rites.
The family suggests contributions be made in his memory to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hospice of Fairfield County or the American Cancer Society.
