Alfredo Luis Valente, age 68, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2020 at Upstate Community Hospital in Syracuse after a five-year battle with cancer.
Alfredo was born in the seaside city of Mar del Plata, Argentina on December 1, 1951, to Alfredo Luis Valente, Sr and Poema Edelmira Molina de Valente. Alfredo attended the University of Buenos Aires Medical School, where he graduated in 1975. He started his medical career as a surgeon in Argentina, and later came to the United States to train as a pathologist at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC from 1991-1996. He went on to complete a fellowship in Pediatric Pathology in 1997, and then a second fellowship in Surgical Pathology in 1998 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Alfredo joined the faculty at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse in 2002, where he remained until his retirement earlier this year.
Alfredo is survived by his younger brother Abel Alejandro Valente, who lives in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Sadly, Abel was unable to travel to be with his brother in his last days or to memorialize him with his Syracuse-area friends due to travel restrictions stemming from the Coronavirus pandemic. Alfredo was a lover of history, and, as such, he had long dreamed of traveling to historic sites in Europe. In his final years of his life, Alfredo attended to two of the top items on his bucket list and made a trip to Italy and Vatican City in 2018 with his dear friend Gustavo de la Roza and a trip to Spain in 2019 with his brother Abel Alejandro. Alfredo will be fondly remembered by those who had the pleasure of working with him at Upstate, by his fellow parishioners at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt, and by others whose lives were touch by Alfredo.
A Mass will be held for Alfredo at Holy Cross Church at 4112 E Genesee St, DeWitt, on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 11am. Immediately following the Mass, Alfredo's ashes will be placed in the mausoleum at St. Mary's Cemetery, which is located behind Holy Cross Church.
