FIRST POLICE CHIEF REMEMBERED (By Brandon Addeo)
From the Sandusky Register, published December 16, 2020

Local law enforcement remembered their first leader of Perkins Township's police department, who died on Sunday.

James "Jimmy" Dee, who became the department's first chief in 1958, died at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain after a brief illness, according to his obituary. He was 86.

"He paved the way for all of us to be here today," Perkins police Chief Vince Donald said. "He kind of set the bar for where this agency is and how it evolved to what it is today."

After serving as chief for about a decade, Dee left the department and eventually served as a Perkins Township trustee and an Erie County commissioner.

He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps prior to his work in law enforcement, and eventually formed the Marine Corps League Firelands Detachment No. 1192.

Donald's immediate predecessor, former police Chief Robb Parthemore, said he knew Dee well. Parthemore said both he and Dee were interested in keeping the history of the police department, and he sometimes sought guidance from Dee.

"Throughout my career, if I had questions, his door was always open to me," Parthemore said. "He was certainly an important figure to Perkins Township."

Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth described Dee as an outgoing and friendly person who was always interested in professionalism and training for police officers.

"He loved law enforcement and loved being a law enforcement officer," Sigsworth said. "He will be missed."

Dee's visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Friday at David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Dee spoke to the Register about his time with Perkins police during a 2018 event at the police department.

Dee said that when he first started, he was the department's only employee.

"It was just myself," he said in 2018. "It was 14 hours a day, you'd go to bed at 3 to 4 a.m. and if you get a call you'd go take care of it."

Dee said he had to use his own equipment, like his car, and it wasn't until about five to six years on the job that he had part-time officers to help him.

"After seven to eight years we had full-time officers," Dee said.

Despite the initial difficulty getting the department off the ground, he said it was the "most rewarding job (he'd) ever had."

"I really did like it."
