WALKERTON, IN -

Betty was born in Dowagiac, Michigan, to Walter and Suzanne Leitz of Eau Claire, Michigan. She graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1948. Following high school, she attended South Bend College of Commerce and then worked for Sears as a credit manager. On June 10, 1950, Betty married her high school sweetheart, Lowell G. Hartsell. A few years later they moved to South Bend, IN, where her husband worked for Kreamo Bakery. They spent 11 years in South Bend before moving to Walkerton, where they purchased and operated Curly's Drive-In. They spent 20 years in Walkerton raising their five children. Betty also worked for Wilcox Grocery Store and Walkerton Elementary School. After the death of their son Steven in 1978, Betty and Lowell moved back to South Bend, where she worked for Montgomery Wards Telemarketing until she retired. Upon Lowell's long-awaited retirement, they spent more than 30 winters in Florida until Betty became too ill to travel. Not only Betty's son Steven, but two loving daughters-in-law, Robin and Sandra, preceded her in death. She sadly leaves behind her husband of 70 years, Lowell, and their four children: Gregory (Kathryn), Kenneth (Peggy), Gordon, and Suzanne (Stephen). Betty is also survived by her seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A private family viewing will be held followed by a public Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church, 807 Tyler St., Walkerton, at 11:00am on Friday, December 18, with Fr. Donald Davison, CPPS officiating. Hanley and Sons Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements, and wish to express their deepest and most heartfelt sympathy's to Lowell and all of Betty's family.
