Robert was a former Marine and a career law enforcement officer who served with Louisville Police Department and the cities of Jeffersontown and Lebanon. He attended St. Xavier High School and earned an undergraduate degree from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master of Science degree from University of Louisville Urban Studies Institute. He enjoyed fishing, drawing and reading and writing poetry.
Robert is survived by Barbara, his wife of 42 years, children Anne Eldridge, Bob Gutman, Scott Laird, David Laird and Teena Laird, and15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The son of Ann and Phillip Gutman, he was preceded in death by two children, Susan Gutman Ruhe and Philip Gutman, and his siblings, Phillip Gutman, Donald Gutman and Doris Poteet.
His remains were cremated. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, no ceremony was held. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus of Louisville.
