The grave is on the steep slope which overlooks Luzley in the distance. It has been engulfed by the shrubbery on the right hand side of this ground. To find the grave one must locate the Broadbent grave (shown marked by an arrow in one of the photos) To the left of this grave is the Cooper grave. The Sykes grave lies to the left of this. There are some wooden planks marking the plot but both the Cooper and Sykes graves are within the encroaching wooded area.

Ernest Sykes married Alice Bredbury, in Saddleworth, in 1905.

Ernest and Alice had three children: Percy, Harold, and Ivy.

Percy was born Outlane, Huddersfield on 7 December 1906

Harold was born Milnsbridge, Huddersfield 29 May 1910

In 1911 – Ernest age 26, a wool dyers labourer, and Alice age 27, were living at 4 Croft Place, Milnsbridge, with their sons Percy age 4 years, and Harold age 10 months.

Ernest and Alice lived at 3 Bank Street, Mossley, from before the war, and they were still living there when Ernest was awarded the VC in 1917.

Ernest and Alice's daughter Ivy was born in Mossley in 1920.

Alice died in late February 1920.
