She passed away peacefully on December 16, 2020.
Mary married Paul Russo on September 21,1946. They built a life together with their five children in Des Moines and Urbandale.
Mary was a homemaker until her children were grown and later retired from Northwestern Bell Phone Company.
She loved her family deeply and it showed. All who knew Mary or her family knew there was always a seat at the table for them and the door was always open if you were in the neighborhood.
Mary had a passion for cooking. She rarely used a recipe. It was “A little bit of this and a little bit of that.” She was a phenomenal cook, which was passed on from generations and is still
shown through her children.
She was also an extremely hard worker. Born from Italian immigrants, her work ethic was instilled in her at a very young age. She kept her home impeccable, mopping the floor by hand until her late 80’s.
Mary might have been 99, but her sense of humor never dissipated. She was full of one liners and was never afraid to make sure you knew what she was thinking.
She was so proud to be Italian and passed that pride onto her children and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by four of her children. Richard (Judy) of Mishawaka, IN, Diane Smith (Jack) of
Des Moines, Dennis (Pat) of De Soto and Robert (Jennifer) of Urbandale. Her Grandchildren; Jennifer, Breanne, Aaron, Michael, Kalin, Leslie, Jacob and Jordan. Many great-grand children, several nieces and nephews and her sister, Enes Logli.
Awaiting her in Heaven were her parents; Husband; Daughter, Linda Russo and Brothers Dante and Rudy.
Services for Mary will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Westover Funeral Home (6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, IA 50322). The family asks that you please wear a mask and practice social distancing while at the service. Internment will be at Glendale Cemetery.
