Felicitas was many things to many people — wife, mother, neighbor and friend. A devout Catholic, she graduated in 1939 from St. Mary High School in Lansing. She then worked at Oldsmobile in the personnel department until she and Joe started their family, returning as an executive secretary when the youngest of their eight children started school. While there, she was active in the GM Girls’ Club, participated in blood drives, and entertainment and advertising campaigns. She was known at work for her competence and attention to detail.
She always had time for her children, helping with school activities, attending sporting events, and acting as chauffeur for them and their friends. She belonged to two bridge clubs — one for more than 60 years. Once her children were grown, she helped care for the grandchildren.
Fiercely independent, Felicitas lived on her own into her 90’s, was the designated driver for friends, and continued to host family gatherings and dinner parties. People often noted that she was a “classy lady.” She always wore lipstick and earrings, with perfectly quaffed hair and a carefully selected wardrobe. Her granddaughter described her to a tee as the “perfect combination of grace and spunk.”
In retirement, Felicitas and Joe attended daily Mass. They took up camping and traveled the country visiting friends and relatives. Felicitas also volunteered at Sparrow Hospital’s St. Lawrence Campus for nearly 35 years where she enjoyed the camaraderie of the many other volunteers.
She is survived by her eight children, Mary Sue (Carl) McLaughlin, Margie (Danny) Miller, Betsy (Ron) Beachnau, Julie White, Patty (Mark) Hill, Johanna White, and David White, 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 3 nephews.
The family is especially grateful for her daughter, Julie, who was her companion and caregiver for the past nearly five years, and Residential Hospice for their compassion and support.
Because of restrictions, a private family Mass of the Christian Burial is planned for December 22, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Cathedral, Lansing. The Mass will be livestreamed on the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Home Facebook page. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mary Cathedral, or Residential Hospice in memory of Felicitas M. White.
