Machau dies in Vietnam
Johnnie Boyd Machau, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Machau of Redmond and a 1965 graduate of Redmond High School, was instantly killed by enemy artillery fire in Quang Tri area of South Vietnam Sunday, Sept. 10. His family was notified a week later when a Marine corpsman brought the official news.
Johnnie had been in South Vietnam only 10 days before his tragic death. He is the second boy of the 1965 graduating class to have been killed in Vietnam, having been preceded in death by Lance Cpl. Timothy Meeker. Arrangements are being made to bury Johnnie next to the grave of his former class- and teammate.
Johnnie Boyd Machau was born Aug. 20, 1946, at Prineville and attended school there until his parents moved to Redmond in February 1961. He was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball and most valuable player in baseball in his junior year, most valuable player in football in his senior year, honorary captain of his senior year basketball team, four years in FFA and often a prize winner in his 4-H and FFA livestock exhibits.
After being graduated from RHS in 1965, he attended COC until March 1966, when he joined the Marine Corps. He received his training at Camp Pendleton, Cal., and in Hawaii.
Besides his parents, he is survived by three older sisters, Mrs. Julia Jean Silvey of Prineville, Mrs. Geraldine Ballard of Camp Sherman and Mrs. Patsy Sue Simmons of Porterville, Cal., and a younger brother, Delbert, a student at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario. Funeral arrangements will be made by Zacher Mortuary later when the body has been returned to Redmond.
