Charles served in the Army for two years during the Korean conflict and graduated from Michigan Technological University. He worked as an engineer on various construction projects in the Upper Peninsula including the International Bridge that connects Sault Ste. Marie, USA to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. Charles was also an employee of the US Army Tank Automotive Command in Warren for 43 years until his retirement at age 76 in 2004. He ran a division that oversaw tank and weapon systems, designs, and quality control. Charles was well respected, had two secretaries, one of the highest security clearances, and traveled all over the United States and Mexico.
Charles worked hard for much of his life and helped countless amounts of people. He was known for his incredible photographic memory, his intelligence, and his work ethic.
Charles is survived by his daughters Gloria Evanoff and Roxanne (Anthony Iapacucci) Evanoff; his granddaughter Rachel (David Ruthinowski) Becker; and his great-grandson Cameron Parshall. He is preceded in death by his wife Yvonne Smith; his parents Alphonse and Olive Smith; and his siblings Gervaise Smith, Gerald Smith, Donna (Al) Norton, Francis "Paddy" (Doreen) Smith, June (Jim) Vincent, Lois (Wilfred) Bumstead, and Lola Smith.
There will be a visitation on Sunday, December 27 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM with the funeral service at 7:00 PM at Gramer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St, Clawson MI, 48017; (248) 435-9010. www.GramerFuneralHome.com
