Mary Jean (Bunky) Williams Reid Smith was born May 12, 1947 to the late John and Vivian Williams in Stamford, Connecticut and was the eldest of 3 siblings. Mary was a graduate of Stamford High School and Katherine Gibbs Business School where she received a certification in Secretarial Science and Business Ethics. In 1965, she married James Reid also of Stamford, CT and from this union four boys were born, James (preceded in death), George, Brian and Jason Reid.

In her professional career, Mary always reached for a higher level often working two or three jobs to provide for the needs of her growing young family. Working across industry lines, Mary worked to provide excellent Customer Service Care for businesses in retail, financial services and healthcare, retiring from Health Net and Bridgeport Hospital in 2011.

As busy as she was working full-time and raising four boys, Mary found the time to volunteer to help those in need. For many years she lent her talents and benevolent, loving nature to nonprofit organizations such St. Luke’s Women’s Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence, Toy-for-Tots and the Suicide Prevention Hotline. She also fostered many young children thought out the years; and at an age where most people were done raising babies, Mary and her husband James, added an infant boy, Jimmy, and five years later an infant girl, Tiara, to their family and whom she was still raising at the time of her passing. In August 2011, after living and working her entire life in Fairfield County Connecticut, and after the death of her husband James in 2010, Mary bought a new home Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina to enjoy her retirement years and to give her two youngest children a fresh new life in the South.

In May of 2012, on her Sixty-Fifth birthday, Mary married again to a long-time family friend Melvin Smith of New Bern, North Carolina. Along the way, Melvin had introduced her to Macarthur Baker and his wife Chris, Owners of the Tabernacle of Praise Holy Church of Apostolic Faith. Their relationship had strengthened though the church and Mary would contribute to various charitable efforts in the name of their church such as collecting gifts for the elderly In several rest homes in Raleigh and Cary, participating in toys for tots for underprivileged kids, and donating meals on wheels for people in need of food. Melvin also preceded her in death in 2017.
