Born in Masschusetts, her family moved to Philadelphia in 1935 due to Great Depression. Her mother Armenouhi was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide and her father Haroutune, Rose's hero, fought against it. Her family moved to Philadelphia in 1935 where she graduated from West Philadelphia High School. During the war Rose worked at a Westinghouse defense plant, one of the era's iconic "Rosie the Riveters". She married Martin Shelengian in 1947 and they shared 64 years of devoted marriage. Rose became a working mother to three children, serving as executive secretary of the Ultra Sonic Seal Company. Rose was fiercely independent, an excellent cook, and dedicated to her family and Armenian heritage. She had a special relationship with her grandchildren, and in recent years was active in the Rosie the Riveter movement, for which she was honored by the mayor of Philadelphia. Predeceased by her beloved husband Marty and sister Madeline, she is survived by her children Armine (the late Bill) Arthin, Richard (Constance) and Karen (Greg) Sookiasian, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Arlington Cemetery on Thursday, Dec. 31st at Noon. Donations to St. Gregory's Armenian Church or the Armenian Sisters Academy. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)
