Joseph Adam August died at age 91 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 12, 1906, in Hartford, CT, the son of Adam Augustanowicz (Augustinaviczus) and Josephine Baszdaytis (AKA Bazdaitis). He was married to Stephanie (AKA Stella, AKA Sophie) Pirog from 1936 until his death. (Both of his parents were born in Lithuania). He lived in Hartford all of his life. He retired from Hamilton Standard Division of United Technologies and had previously been employed by the Royal Typewriter Company. He was a communicant of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church. He was an excellent fisherman, in both salt and fresh water. Joe enjoyed fishing with his friends, and with his granddaughter, Lorraine. Joe had a great knowledge of edible and medicinal plants, and he passed that onto to his granddaughter, Lorraine. He had a remarkable way with animals, both wild and domesticated. Joe had a wonderful pet dog, a terrier, named Amber. Joe had a close relationship with Amber, and taught her remarkable tricks. Jeo's gardening skills were unsurpassed. He grew the most superlative tomatoes. Joe knew how to survive off the land after suffering through poverty and the Great Depression. Joe was a big man. He was very tall; a gentle giant. He was kind, generous, and loving. Most everyone that met him was touched by his optimism and his natural kindness. He enjoyed music and loved playing the harmonica alongside his brother in law, Stanley Solkowski, who played accordion. Joe was very fond of his nephew, Stanley, Jr., who ran a farm out in Harwinton. Joe loved his nieces, Susan Czernicka and Elizabeth (Betty) Sribnik and his nephew, Stanley. Joe was nicknamed, "The Commish" because of everyone he knew in the neighborhood. Joe would sometimes become tearful when talking about how his father, Adam, died at age 32. This radically changed his life as a child, and left the family impoverished. Joe was predeceased by his sister, Helen Moran and by his step sister, Julia Jaslowski. Joe was a close friend of Martin Norkitas of East Granby. They would often commiserate and go fishing together. Joe had a close bond with his son in law, Joseph Fleury. Joe was married Stephanie Pirog in 1936, and they were joined in marriage for 61 years. Their relationship was loyal and devoted. Stephanie and Joe had a great love for each other, and produced a daughter, Carol, of East Granby. Joe and Stephanie had four granddaughters, Lisa Fleury, Lorraine Fleury, Allison Murphy, and Amy Therrien. Joe and Stephanie were a constant presence in the lives of their granddaughters, and took an active role in their upbringing. The eldest daughter, Lisa, came to reside with Joe and Stephanie at age 16, and they loved and nurtured her. Joe has one great granddaughter, Grace Therrien, and one great grandson, Wayne Therrien. The funeral mass was held on 7/21/1998 at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Hartford. Burial took place at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT.
