Late of WHARF STREET, MARYBOROUGH
Mr. F. Dau Drowned As the police were about to cease dragging operations in the river yesterday for the body of Mr. Ferdinand Augustave (Eli) Dau, between 5.30 and six o'clock, watchers saw the body rise to the surface in the middle of the river opposite the Wide Bay pontoon. The body was recovered. Dragging operations were commenced when it was reported that Mr. Dau had fallen into the river near the Wide Bay pontoon on Tuesday night. It was stated that in company with Messrs Dick Steinhardt and John Moran, Mr. Dau set out to board a launch but slipped and fell into the river. However, he was stated to have swum to the side of the boat but nothing further was seen of him. A later conflicting report stated that he was seen at the Post Office on the following morning and subsequently at the Urangan Hotel. It was afterwards proved incorrect.
The late Mr. Dau who was a sawyer by trade was employed during most of his life by Messrs. Hyne and Son. Ltd. Aged 51 years he was born at Maryborough. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lillian Dau, and a step-son, Mr. Alex Nicholl, also three brothers — Messrs. William (M'boro.), Frederick and James Henry Dau (Granville) — and four sisters — Mesdames G. O'Brien, J. Morrison, A. Ogden, C. Zampich (all of Granville) and H. Becht (Bundaberg).
