W.M. "Bill" Moreau, 85, lifetime resident of Dayton died Monday, September 24, 2007 in Houston, Texas.


He was born January 9, 1922 in Dayton to parents, Leo and Mae Dee Dixon Moreau, graduated from Dayton High School in 1940 and later attended Sam Houston State Teachers College. He proudly served during World War II in the United States Marine Corp where he was awarded a Purple Heart. Mr. Moreau was named Citizen of the Year from the Liberty Dayton Chamber of Commerce. A retired senior member of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department, he served as Chief for several years. Mr. Moreau was the Mayor of Dayton for 13 ½ years, which was the longest running term prior to Larry Harris. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a current member of the Liberty County Appraisal Review Board.


A long time rice grower in Liberty County, a member of the Southwest Texas Cattleman's Association and Beefmasters Breeders United, Mr. Moreau was well known for his wonderful cooking and his graciousness to share with so many. He enjoyed his cattle and his yearly travels to visit friends. His family was most important in his life.


Services for Mr. Moreau will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 27, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jon Stouffer officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.


Mr. Moreau was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Katie Moreau, his brother, Clayton Leo Moreau and his grandson, Buffy Anderson. He is survived by his sons: Donald Gale Moreau of Dayton and Roger Anderson of Rockdale; his daughters: "Dee Dee" Johnson of Dayton, "Punkie" Shanks and husband Randy of Dayton; his grandchildren: Gary Moreau and wife Amy of Dayton; Leo Moreau of Dayton; Leah Yates of Dayton; Fanci Conner of Clear Lake; Paula Soileau of Dayton; Chad DeHart and wife Sarah of Montgomery; Brant Elliott and wife Laurie of Dayton; great-grandchildren: Kati Hard, Kindal Moreau, and Sabrina DeHart; Paw-Paw's girls: Mikayla and Mikenzie Yates; Also a host of other relatives and friends.


For those who desire, the family request memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department.
