Samuel Lynch Burdette was the fifth of nine children born to Samuel Hamilton Curry Burdette and Mary Ella Lynch of Monroe County.

He married Aileen Louella Houchins October 25, 1924 in Union, Monroe, West Virginia and they had ten children together before Aileen died in 1940. After the death of his wife, Samuel was economically and emotionally forced to send the eight surviving children to live with his sister, his sister in-law, and his mother and father in-law.

He later met and fell in love with Emily Brady. His children could see that Emily had a positive effect on their father and encouraged him to marry her which he did on January 20, 1953 in Russell County, Alabama.

Samuel and Emily lived happily together for the next thirteen and a half years until his death. Emily requested to be allowed to bury him near their home in Columbus, Georgia and his children honored that request.
