ALLEN EDWARD HILL
July 6, 1928 - December 21, 2020

Rear Admiral Hill peacefully passed away on December 21, 2020 at the age of 92. Born and raised in Riverside, CA at an early age he found himself enchanted by the activity at Flabob airport and was determined to be an aviator. Student Body President at University Heights Junior H.S. and 11th grade Class President at Poly H.S. showed glimpses of what was to come. At the age of 24, a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, a commissioned Navy pilot, and newly married to Jacqueline Ellen Brechin, his career would soar.

Naval War College, National War College, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commander of Squadrons, Air Wings, Naval Warships, Training Command for the Pacific Fleet, and concluding his assignments as Director Of Tactical Readiness. As such, he became the first Admiral to be totally responsible for Naval Warfare Doctrine. No challenge was too great. Personal highlights included holding the record for the first all jet and highest altitude dog-fight as he battled multiple Mig jets over Korea. Establishing and instructing at The Fighter Weapons School which became known as Topgun. Commanding the attack Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger and its complement of 5,200 servicemen, which somehow included a guest appearance on the Johnny Carson Show. His greatest personal achievement was surviving a surface to air strike, wounded and on fire, he would eventually eject and was rescued in Haiphong Harbor. His personal decorations include the distinguished Service Medal, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, three Legion of Merit awards the Korean Presidential Commendation and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

With his continued love for Jacqueline he retired in Riverside in 1982. Great friends played a major role in his love for Riverside. Whether it was golfing, fishing, hunting, or gardening, reading, writing, or just letting someone know his opinion, he was truly at home. Much of that activity centered around Victoria Club, a one time President, he enjoyed its environment immensely. Married at the Mission Inn, he would add the honor of having his “Wings” placed on the famed Aviators Wall. Celebrating his 65th Wedding Anniversary there in 2017 would complete an Inn trifecta. California City College Alumnus of the Year, Grand Marshall at Veterans Day Parades, mentor to many that sought military careers, the Admiral stayed busy. Most recently, having his name dedicated to the newly remodeled Innovation Space at West Riverside Elementary, his alma mater, brought him great honor and fulfillment.

Survived by his wife Jacqueline, daughter Suzanne, son Scott, sister Joanne Fraser, and brother Martin.

Due to Covid-19 funeral services will be private. The Admirals interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
