OWEN, David Caldwell
November 28, 1921 - May 2, 2013

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, David Caldwell Owen, a man of great character and kindness, passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital with his family by his side. David was a devoted and caring husband to Norma (residing in Kensington Gardens) for 63 years. He was much loved by daughter Frances Owen and son Dr. Stuart Owen and their spouses Dr. Michael Cord and Julie Owen, as well as grandchildren David, Rachael and Rebecca. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family including sister-in-law Helen McCuaig and Lois Walker. David was the youngest in his family of 11 and is predeceased by his brothers Fred, Charlie, Jim, Tom, John, George, Bill and sisters Annie, Bessie and Dorothy. Born in Montreal, David was the only sibling to be delivered in a hospital. He mentioned it was the first real holiday his mother had experienced. David was raised in the rural village of Weir Quebec on a farm initially lacking running water and electricity. At age 6 he witnessed a plane landing on a nearby lake and from that moment on he knew he wanted to be a pilot. In 1941, at age 19, he joined the RCAF, won his wings and flew many reconnaissance missions off the coast of British Columbia. Later, while flying off the coast of Newfoundland he survived the crash of a routine flight and was hospitalized for a year, defying predictions of his demise, but suffering ongoing disability. In spite of this he perfected his golf swing and put it to excellent use for many years at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club. Unable to continue as a pilot, David pursued electrical engineering, graduating from McGill University in 1949, and going on to develop a career with Bell Canada. He retired after 35 years as Senior Assistant VP. At his retirement party in 1985, he was given a memory book by his colleagues and as a testament to his character there were letters and well wishes from hundreds of people expressing their admiration and affection. David's family will always be appreciative of his kindness and his ability to balance his strong work ethic with his devotion to family. He loved having discussions around the dinner table about current events and politics and was very passionate about his opinions. He set a high standard for self-sufficiency, integrity, responsibility, and know-how. Although he lost the best part of his prized independence following a second stroke, he maintained his kindly disposition and wry sense of humour. The family is exceedingly grateful and appreciative for the support he received at the Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing (K2W) at the end of his life. In particular we want to express our thanks to the exceptional, and superb care of his primary nurse Nada. She enriched his life until the end. In addition, he had wonderful caregivers Elsie, Cristeta, and Malou who could always bring a smile to his face (along with his Tim Horton's coffee and doughnuts). Friends will be welcomed at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street Ottawa on May 8th 2013 from 2 - 4 p.m. followed by a funeral service from 4 - 5 p.m. A military service with interment of cremated remains will be held at Beechwood Cemetary 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa from 11:30 to 12 p.m., May 9, 2013. In lieu of flowers and in memory of David, donations can be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation: Veteran's Fund.
